TopStylePro CSS & XHTML Editor

by eric on July 23rd, 2006 in: Web Design

Without question, one of my favorite CSS and XHTML editors is TopStyle Pro by Nick Bradbury.

TopStyle has been one of my primary coding tools for a few years and is used in some capacity on every IvyCat project, including this site, sewmyheadon.com.

Although the free version, TopStyle Lite, allows easy editing of CSS files, the upgrade to TopStyle Pro is worth every penny and offers tons of useful features including:

  • Edit your HTML, XHTML and CSS in a single program
  • Check your CSS syntax against multiple browsers
  • See the effects of your stylesheet changes in real time
  • Automated cleanup of CSS code using the Style Sweeper
  • Upgrade outdated HTML – including font tags – to CSS
  • Integrates with HTML Tidy to keep your code neat, clean and mistake-free
  • Pinpoint CSS classes used throughout your site
  • Easy browser previews
  • Validate your code from within the program using the W3C HTML Validator

Keep in mind that this is an editor for coders – not a WYSIWYG editor. If you use a program like Dreamweaver or (cough) FrontPage, you can designate TopStyle as your CSS editor.

If you’re looking to brush up your XHTML, HTML and especially your CSS skills, TopStyle is a great way to go.

That said, there haven’t been any updates to the TopStyle software in quite a while. Nick Bradbury sold his business to NewsGator and their focus is largely in the feed reader market.

Recent reports are that NewsGator is now hiring and devoting resources to developing this product further. Can’t wait to see what they come up with.
