I have yet to update my own laptop, but was considering doing it today while I work.

As I mentioned earlier, my biggest concerns with upgrading production machines are the lack of support for some of the add-ons that I use with Firefox. Did a bit of searching and my most critical add-ons either have updates or beta updates, so I think I’ll give it a whirl.

I updated my dev server from Gutsy to Hardy yesterday and it went without a hitch.

What I did was go into software sources and for the download server I picked “choose best server”. After going through the pings, it landed me on the fastest one (one in Canada, hah!). Right now I’m getting about 400kb/s while the upgrade tool is downloading packages.

Looking forward to giving Hardy a spin. I also listened to the Linux Outlaws episode you mentioned and found that helpful. I need to keep up with that podcast–I like the hosts and the format. Sounds like no new groundbreaking features in Hardy, but a lot of work under the hood, and getting the latest version of Gnome is always good! I’m looking forward to checking out some of the little day-to-day usability improvements in Gnome. It’s all about the details

Glad to see they handled it in Hardy Heron.

So far, I’ve just upgraded the one laptop (Compaq Presario V2000) and, although it took all night, the only other problem I’ve had so far is that Compiz Fusion ‘broke.’

This was easily fixed by re-installing the xserver-xgl package and resetting Compiz preferences.

This laptop (and my other) are using Wicd instead of Gnome’s Network Manager and it even left that intact. Plus some of the other packages that broke when upgrading to Gutsy like emelfm2 and Komodo IDE still work!

I’m tempted to upgrade other machines soon!

One sticking point:
Hardy comes with Firefox 3 Beta 5 (I think) by default and many of the plugins I use aren’t yet updated, like Firebug, Open ID Seatbelt, etc.

I’m sure I could install FF2 as well, though.

I’d love to install it now, but I remember that the upgrade process can become complicated so I want to make sure I budget enough time.

When do you plan to install it on your primary work desktop?

I’ve tried the network upgrade and, although it was working, it showed about 9 hours for the upgrade, due to the fact that the release is today and there’s a tremendous load on the distro servers.

So I tried upgrading from the Alternate CD and haven’t quite nailed it yet.

I’ll report back after I’ve upgraded a machine or two.

Still debating whether I want to try the upgrade through the update manager, or do a clean install.
